The BGC Senior Men’s Section (BGCSS Seniors / Seniors) is a very active section within the Club with some 230 members aged 55 and over. It is officially recognised within the Club with the Seniors’ Captain sitting on the BGC General Committee.
The section is administered by a Committee and its primary purpose is to organise a variety of competitions for the benefit and enjoyment of its members:
The nominated day for Senior competitions is Wednesday.
Membership is open to all male Club members aged 55 and over and costs a modest £5 per annum, payable for the section’s financial year, which starts on 1 November. This entitles the member to enter all the competitions and represent the club at inter-club matches.
The Annual General Meeting is held annually in early December where the officers are appointed and 20+ trophies and cups, suitably engraved, are presented to the winners.
Every weekday morning, there are various groups of senior golfers offering friendly roll-up golf (see other sections on the website for more details).
There is a regular Senior Captain’s Newsletter, giving information on the results of section competitions, inter-club matches, notable achievements, and other news. This is emailed directly to all paid up section members.
The BGC Junior Section has really taken off over the past 3 years and has become a very active and involved part of the Club.
We welcome junior golfers, both girls and boys, of all ages and abilities. You do not need to have a handicap to get involved as we run sessions for both experienced players and those very new to the game – all you will need is to be under 18, have your own clubs and a desire to play and enjoy golf!
Our Academy Course is a brilliant way to introduce yourself to the game and we run a regular Saturday afternoon group session. Over the last couple of years we have seen a number of youngsters graduate from the 9 hole par 3 to being Main Course members with a full WGS Handicap.
For those who join the Main Course we can support and help you to gain your WGS Handicap so you can participate in our regular Junior competitions every Saturday. Our more experienced junior members are very often on hand to provide great support and advice to those new and improving players.
If you are an established WGS Handicap holding member, you are welcome to enter our Saturday Junior Competition – we typically tee off around 1.15pm and will play between 9-18 holes depending on the light and weather. We play a variety of different formats – singles, pairs and team competition; stableford, medal and match-play – all with the intention of helping you improve your game, further your enjoyment and meet new friends.
Those Juniors with a handicap of under 18 are also eligible to enter the Club Competitions and we have seen a number of successes over the past couple of years.
We also hold a Junior Captains Day, when parents and relatives are encouraged to join in, matches against both the Ladies & Senior Sections and our own Club Championships.
Parents are always welcome to walk around and there is usually a good number in the bar afterwards to enjoy the usual hospitality before we hand out the prizes!
Welcome to the Ladies Section
The BGC Ladies Section (BGCLS) is a very friendly and thriving section with 100 full main course members, 11 special 9 hole members, 5 associate members and 36 Academy members.
The section is administered by a Committee, led by its current Ladies Captain. The Ladies AGM is held in January, where the officers are appointed and a presentation of trophies and awards are presented to the previous year’s winners.
The primary purpose is to organise a variety of competitions and events throughout the year for the benefit and enjoyment of the section. Some of these include:
The nominated day for Ladies competitions is a Tuesday with an alternate competition day on a Saturday.
Sunday competitions are available for ladies to take part in, playing from measured Yellow Tees, unless they are for a boarded men’s competition.
On a Thursday and Saturday there are open roll up groups. Everyone is very welcome to turn up and join in. We also have a Facebook page and various WhatsApp groups to keep you up to date with information, bookings and events.
There is a regular Ladies Captain’s Newsletter, sharing information on achievements and forthcoming events which is emailed to all Lady members.
The Senior Ladies Section is open to all lady members over 50 years of age. There is an annual membership fee of £3.00. The Senior Organiser is responsible for the administration of the group.
Monthly 9 hole competitions are held over alternating front and back nines, usually on a Thursday.
There are trophy competitions for ladies aged 65+ played over 9 and 13 holes, as well as an 18 hole competition open to all. There are also trophies for aggregate scores and eclectics.
Two mixed events are held each year along with the Senior Men’s Section.
Friendly matches are arranged between the Senior Sections of other clubs.
The group is very sociable, has refreshments and presentations after several of the competitions. It also allows the more mature ladies to play in qualifying competitions over 9 holes and retain their handicaps.
