Fish & Fowl - Sunday 9th December
Ladies and Gentlemen, Christmas is nearly here - therefore, so is The Fish and Fowl mixed competition.
A fun competition, but having been played for many years at Bedfordshire GC, with plenty of tradition, this pre-Christmas event is defiitely one worthy of your support. As the name indicates, the prizes are slightly different to the ones you might normally expect to win!
Please sign up on the notice in the foyer and if you haven't got a partner we will find you one.
Francis & Mike 'rise from the Ashes' to secure victory - Sunday 7th October
A fine Autumn day dawned on Sunday for the very popular Ashes Cup mixed foursomes trophy competition where nobody knows who their playing partner might be until 10 minutes before tee off. 36 players gathered for a hot soup lunch and the much anticipated draw for partners. As usual the draw made for some interesting pairings with new acquaintances made and old friendships forged.
The course had recovered from the previous days deluge and the greens were much faster than expected. This made for some short putts, followed by much longer ones as the ball scooted across the greens and ladies found themselves in parts of the course they had never visited before. Unsurprisingly Mike Fairey and his playing partner, Francis Godfrey triumphed with 33 points. Mike must be the ladies choice of partner going forward as he retained the trophy this year and has now claimed it four times! The podium results were as follows:
1st – Mike Fairey & Francis Godfrey - 33 points
2nd – Roger Willis & Sheila Fairey - 32 points
3rd - Andy Brown & Sue Marsh - 30 points
Winners Francis & Mike with Captain Jim
2nd & 3rd place pairings

Seb Reigns Supreme in Stagsden Trophy
Over 100 members took part in the Stagsden Trophy, which was played over two days last weekend and celebrates the Club's opening in Stagsden in September 2000.
As ever, there was a really competitive feel about what is an important event in the Club's calendar and conditions over the two days varied to make things even more interesting. To show how tough things were for the field, only 4 players managed to score below their handicap and none of these were by more than a couple of points.
As so often happens with these big event, the best players rise to the challenge, as this year's Stagsden Trophy was no different. The four players worthy of a special mention are as follows:
in 4th with 38 points (c/b) was BGC Board Chairman, Steve Coppock
in 3rd also with 38 (c/b) was Club Captain Jim Godfrey
in 2nd, also with 38 (c/b) was Jason Hannon
but the overall winner, also with 38 (c/b) and playing off scratch was our Club Champion, Seb Lovell.
Well done to Seb and all the others in the placings for such impressive performances
Stagsden Trophy Winner - Seb Lovell
Bristow Cup & Social Golf - Monday 27th August
There was a distinctly Autumnal feel to the weather on Bank-Holiday Monday with chilly temperatures & a very strong wind - not what we would expect in August! We're pleased to say though, that it didn't deter the Members who turned up to play either social golf, or the mixed Bristow Cup which is played in family pairs.
5 pairs competed for this lovely trophy in a foursomes Stableford. For some it was a challenge but one pair marched through to claim their first trophy playing together.
1st Sue Marsh & Tony Marsh, 31 points
2nd Anne Godden & Jim Godden, 29 points
The winners can be seen receiving their trophy from Ladies Captain, Judi Monico
Winners Sue & Tony Marsh.
Brenda & 'Seve' stun the field in the Watson Cup
The Watson Cup is played using the most difficult format for golf - Mixed Foursomes Medal. This, coupled with windy conditions, made for a serious challenge for all those taking part. At least it was a nice bright afternoon!
A competitive field took to the course and as expected, most found it rather hard going as every little mistake was punished with the Medal format. However, a few pairings managed to hold it together and one simply left the others in their wake...
in 3rd place on a very respectable Net 76 were Anne Harris and Graham Crawford
one better on Net 75 were Sue & Tony Marsh who finished runners-up
but the winners by some way were Brenda Beard and Derek 'Seve' Field
A particular well done to them and to all the others who took part in the challenge.
Our winners can be seen here with the magnificent trophy
Our next mixed events are as follows:
Sunday 26th August - Club Match vs. John O'Gaunt - away at John O'Gaunt
Monday 27th August (Bank Holiday) - Bristow Cup & Saunders Cup - mixed social golf
Sunday 16th September - Club Match vs. Dunstable Downs - home fixture
Sign-up sheets are on the mixed board in the foyer and the formats for each competition are in the front of the Club Diary. Please play if you can to avoid any cancellations. Do come and join in the fun both on, and off the course afterwards.

Renee Morgan event is a real Family Affair
What a change in weather fortunes in 7 days, waterproofs were hidden away with sun cream and summer wear out in force on the hottest May Day Bank Holiday since records began. Seven mixed pairs played for the Renee Morgan Trophy and some fantastic scores were recorded on the day, given the superb conditions of our course.
The competitions youngest winner, Roisin Scanlon was crowned playing with her Dad and she also achieved the only ‘2’ of the day.
Results were as follows:
1st Place - Anthony Scanlon & Roisin Scanlon – 42 points
2nd Place - Joe Nellis & Helen Nellis – 41 points
3rd Place - Phil Anderson & Jane Anderson – 40 points
Congratulations to the winners and runners up who are pictured being presented with their prizes by Anne Harris, Mixed Competitions Organiser.

The Ashes Trophy - Sunday 1st October
The Ashes Cup which commemorates the rebuilding of the clubhouse after a fire which destroyed it in 1955, was played for on the 1st October.
Those playing avoided both wind and rain and a pleasant day was had by all participants. Mike Fairey and Chin Fern Griffiths were eventual winners of this prestigious trophy with a 34 point comfortable victory over second-placed Phil Rajotte and Lyn Allen who scored 30 points. The best placed 4 ball included Mike, Chin Fern, Carol Farnworth and Phil Anderson (pictured here).
The day was rounded off with an excellent carvery dinner, “the best dinner I have had at the Club for ages” said Steve Monico.
Winners Mike Fairey and Chin Fern Griffiths

Bristow Cup - Monday 28th August
The Bristow Cup is a mixed foursomes Stableford competition. Foursomes is of course, one of the more challenging formats for golf, but this competition has the added difficulty (some might say) of both members of each pair being required to originate from the same family!
This year, in stunning August Bank-Holiday Monday sunshine and with the course in excellent condition,10 couples took part for the honour of winning the trophy, ensuring there was still some stiff competition for the placings. There were some good scores, but one pairing stood out from the rest.
The leading results were as follows:
In equal 3rd place on 29 points - Richard and Rosemary Harris
In 2nd place with 30 points - Anne Harris and John Tait
Overall winners with an impressive 34 points - Jane and Philip Anderson
Well done to all those above and to the others who took part.
