Róisín 'Eagles' in Junior Golf 'Major' - November 2019
This year over 22,000 junior golfers teed it up at 600 plus courses across the British Isles to earn the right to be one of 24 (12 boys & 12 girls) who qualified to play in the Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Championship. The competition final was a 54 hole strokeplay tournament for under 18's played at the Quinta do Lago, Portugal.
Twelve year old Róisín Scanlon, a Member at Bedfordshire Golf Club, became the youngest finalist in the 35 year history of the event and played against the UK's top juniors several years older than her.
Róisín qualified for the final in Portugal on three under par thanks to her opening round of 72 in the English Girls under 14 Open Championships back in July.
Róisín on course with Justin
Just before the final in Portugal last week, the players had a surprise visit by Justin Rose who also put on a clinic. The highlight of the tournament for Róisín was when she made an up and down from behind a tree to make par in front of Justin Rose to receive a high-five. Then, on the Par 5, 18th she chipped in an Eagle in front of the supporters. After 3 rounds in the final in Portugal, Róisín finished a very creditable 10th place.
Our congratulations to Róisín for performing so well against golfers so much older than her.
Highlights of the event will be televised on Sky Sports over the Christmas period.
Róisín, Justin and lots of silverware!
Juniors Show The Ladies How it's Done - October 2019
Last week saw the annual Ladies vs. the Juniors match and this year's was one of the best.
Our congratulations go to Junior Captain, Holly Gordon and her team for winning a closely fought contest. The juniors winning margin was 1½ to ½.
The Wining Team - With Ladies Captain, Hilary
The competition was played in great spirits coming down to the last hole where the junior boys got a half to retain the trophy for another year.
Huge thanks to the Ladies Captain, Hilary for organizing this fun and exciting match and for all the ladies who made this such an enjoyable event.

Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Championships - Sept 2019
Congratulations to Roisin Scanlon who has qualified for the Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Championships 2019 final, taking place from Monday 11th to Saturday 16th November 2019 – hosted by Quinta do Lago, Portugal.
Roisin’s opening round of -3 at the English Girls Under 14 Open Amateur Championships placed her joint 7th on the national leaderboard, even though she has only just reached the age of 12! She will be joined by 11 other girls and 12 boys. Roisin will be the youngest player and one of youngest players ever to qualify for the finals.
The top 12 in each of the boys’ and girls’ gross competitions will experience a taste of professional life not just through the 54-hole strokeplay finals, but also a media training session and TV coverage from Sky Sports and the first-class facilities and accommodation at the Portuguese resort. The competition will be televised on Sky Sports over the Christmas period.
Our congratulations to her for qualifying and we wish her all the very best in the finals.
'Golf Golf Rocks' - A Successful Programme - July 2019
After a successful taster session at Bedfordshire Golf Club, we had 15 girls sign up for our 6 week GGR programme.
Our Golf Professional Coaches Richard & Steve took the pupils through the various aspects of the game, which included: Putting, Chipping, Iron play & Woods. The last session included a few holes on our Academy course which the girls seemed to really enjoy.
For the majority of the girls it was their first experience of golf, so our coaches kept things simple & made the sessions interactive & fun, with the pupils mainly working in pairs. Then, at the end of each session, they put the girls together in teams to ‘beat the pro’.
In the final week of the programme, we offered an Improvers' Course to all the girls and we're delighted to say that 9 of them have signed up to it - that's a 60% conversion rate. Well done indeed to Richard and Steve for making the sessions so much fun.
We now look forward to seeing their progress and hopefully, over this additional 4 week period, to seeing most of them progress into membership & all the game has to offer.
This would provide a good boost for our growing Junior Section which has been so well developed by our Junior Organising Team of Taneisha & Anthony Scanlon along with our Pro's Richard Banks & Steve Connolly.

BGC Junior Captain Holly in County Win - June 2019
Holly with her winner's salver
Congratulations to Holly Gordon on winning the ladies Sue Patterson Salver held at The Bedford GC on the 9th June. Holly was paired with Stephanie Scott from Aspley Guise GC who together beat a strong field.
Sue Patterson introduced this annual event when she was junior County Organiser as a gentle introduction to County competitions. One player must be in 1st Division and one in 2nd Division.
Runners up were Jess Sporle from John O’Gaunt & Pauline Hargreaves from the Mowsbury & in third place was Amelia Klausner from South Beds GC & Donna Steele from The Millbrook GC.
Holly has been a junior member at the Bedfordshire Golf Club for the last couple of years and is currently our Junior Captain.
This is her first county event win and we hope it’s the first of many to come.
Roisin Wins European Title - June 2019
Roisin Scanlon a member of the Bedfordshire Golf Club returned to Royal Musselburgh Golf Club, Scotland to participate in the USkids European Championships where she finished in second place last year.
Roisin played in the 11-year-old age category. Scottish weather was not kind this year with high winds and heavy rain. After 2 solid rounds of -2 & +1, Roisin was 1 shot off the lead behind Lavanya Gupta of India and Juliette Demeaux of France. The 3-time world champion Isabella Dovhey of USA was a further 1 shot back. On the final round, the lead changed many times but only Roisin and Isabella (2018 champion) shot under par. Both Isabella and Roisin finished on 2 under par which resulted in a sudden death playoff. After 5 play-off holes through wet greens, Roisin kept her nerve and became age 11 Girls USkids European Champion for 2019. Our congratulations go to her for an amazing performance.
Roisin was then selected along with Constanze-Louise Keferstein from Germany to play in the European Van Horn Cup which was played on Gullane No.3 golf course. The Van Horn Cup is a one-day best ball tournament which is contested between the top players from Western Europe against the top players from the rest of the world in age groups 11 - 18. Roisin and Constanze-Louise shot -5 but was not enough to beat the international pair.

County Past Captains Salvers - May 2019
The County Junior, Past Captains' Salvers took place on a rather damp and dreary day at John O'Gaunt Golf Club recently.
We're delighted to say that Bedfordshire Golf Club Members acquitted themselves very well with some excellent performances.
Our congratulations go to Holly Gordon who finished in 3rd place against some top opposition from around the county.
Also playing very well were Roisin Scanlon finished 4th with 33pts and Sommer Chan who was in 7th with 24pts.

Girls Golf Rocks BGC Taster Session - a Huge Success - May 2019
The Golf England initiative to get more girls interested in playing golf, saw its first event at Bedfordshire Golf Club last week when seventeen 5 - 13 year old's turned up for this taster session with our golf professionals Richard Banks and Steve Conolly.
BGC Golf Professional Richard Banks coaching the girls
The girls enjoyed two hours of fun on the driving range, chipping area and putting green.
Some girls showed obvious potential and many of them have already signed up for the six week course which follows this initial session which is very encouraging. Hopefully some will ultimately become Junior members of the club.
Three of our existing talented girls, Holly, Roisin and Georgia, turned up to the session and performed as ambassadors, helping the Pros and acting as role models to the debutantes. Holly and Roisin can be seen below coaching the girls.
Well done to all three of them for helping make the session such a success and putting those attending a golf session for the first time at their ease. BGC Golf Professionals - look out!

Roisin Takes on the Stars in TeeToCup Challenge - April 2019
Recently, Bedfordshire Golf Club's brightest young star Roisin Scanlon was invited to be part of Sir Clive Woodward’s golf team for the next year in the TeeToCup Challenge. They will be playing various matches against Naga Munchetty’s (BBC Breakfast) in Team Clive vs. Team Naga.
The whole aim of the challenge is to see which team can reduce their handicap the most. They use TeeToCup software to share experiences and learning and support each other weekly. The teams are made up of various media and sporting legends, so for Roisin to be involved is a great honour. Each team is made up of 6 players and over the next 9 months will be sharing their experiences and learning through TeeToCup with the support of Trackman, Taylormade and Adidas.
The teams, including Sir Clive Woodward, Naga Munchetty and our very own Roisin Scanlon
The first match took place on Sunday 24th at Lambourne Golf Club and was fiercely contested with Sir Clive Woodward and Roisin dovetailing quite nicely with Roisin shooting just 4 over on the back nine. But Naga Munchetty and her husband fought to the end resulting in an honourable draw.
Roisin really enjoyed the experience and is looking forward to their next match.

Wee Wonders British & Irish Champion 2018
Congratulations to Roisin Scanlon for winning the Adidas Golf, Wee Wonders British & Irish Championships held at St Andrews, Scotland.
This year there were over 56 regional qualifiers held across England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales where 30 players qualified for the grand final at St Andrews, the ‘Home of Golf’.
Roisin Scanlon from Bedfordshire Golf Club competed in the girls 9-10 year old category, along with Olivia Costello from Ireland who lead the field with identical scores over the first 2 rounds. Both girls with playing handicaps of 9 took control of the tournament and with 4 holes to go, either one could have claimed the top prize. Roisin closed the last 4 holes in level par and claimed the top prize by one shot.
Roisin now receives an automatic invitation to the 2019 Wee Wonders Grand Final along with invites to USkids European & World Championships 2019 and a first-place trophy with a voucher from Adidas golf.

Bedfordshire Golf Club is Proud to Host the Tavistock Trophy - Friday 24th August
Bedfordshire Golf Club is pleased to have been asked to host the County Junior Inter-club & Knock-Out Competition, The Tavistock Trophy. The competition was due to be hosted by another club, but unfortunately their courses had been badly affected by the recent drought and were considered unplayable by the organisers.
Bedfordshire Golf Club's 18 Hole Stagsden is recovering well and greening up nicely and has therefore been selected an an alternative venue. Our course management team deserve our thanks for ensuring our courses are in such good condition considering the long dry spell.
The competition itself takes place this Friday from 11.30am off the 1st tee, so please come along and support the county's best young players as they fight it out for the honour of winning the Tavistock Trophy.
Roisin Takes Another Major Step on her Golfing Journey
Roisin Scanlon competed this week in the North of England Junior Open Stroke play Championship at South Moor GC. The competition was run over 3 days and Roisin (who is still only 10) finished 3rd in the under 12's and 8th overall in under 14's categories. Unsurprisingly, she was one of the youngest in the field. Conditions were testing with strong winds and heavy rain on the final day but she still managed to shoot 9 over par - a quite remarkable achievement for one so young.
She has since received confirmation that she has been accepted to compete at the England under 14/16 Open Amateur Championships at Lyme Regis GC. She is the youngest competitor and will be a huge experience for her. We obviously wish her the very best for her next challenge in what is a meteoric rise in the golfing world.
Roisin successfully takes on the world's best junior golfers
Roisin Scanlon had an amazing week of golf in Scotland playing in the US Kids European Golf Championships at the Royal Musselburgh Golf Course (6th oldest course in the World).
Roisin played in the 10 year old age category. On the first day she shot -1 and on the 2nd day shot level par. The final day she shot -3 to finish the tournament on -4 and in 2nd place overall.
The winning score was -7 from a girl from the USA who has won the event for the last 3 years and won 2 world championships. On the last day Roisin made 7 birdies and 1 eagle but was not enough to catch the American.
Third place was also an American followed by two girls from the Czech republic and Germany.
Roisin is now looking forward to the world championship at Pine Hurst, NC in August and hopefully go one better.
The world’s best young golfers, ages 5-18, will travel to East Lothian, Scotland in 2018 for the eleventh annual U.S. Kids Golf European Championship.
In 2017, a record field of over 670 players and their families traveled from more than 50 countries to compete in Europe’s premier junior golf tournament at the Home of Golf
Roisin's 2nd place in the tournament now gives her the highest priority status (Burgundy) to all US kids events around the world.

Eastern Region Junior County Week
A huge well done to Georgia Staroscik & Roisin Scanlon who competed in the East Region Junior County week at Colne Valley GC, Essex.
Georgia amazingly went undefeated for all her 5 matches - a fantastic achievement.
Roisin (age 9) played in two rounds against single digit handicappers and lost 2&1 in both matches gaining invaluable experience in representing the county and the Bedfordshire Golf Club.
Finally - it's great to see some of the up and coming golfing talent in the Juniors Section of the club.
